Marsh Tit in Cogan Wood

A buzzard perched on a fence during the summer 2014:

Cygnus olor
The resident population of Mute Swans varies but can number up to about 80 birds. 1-3 pairs nest, the one pair this year [2011] having a brood of 9 cygnets although as of yesterday, 30th Jul 2011 they seem to have lost one.
Here' a Whooper that visited in Dec 2011 for comparison:

A feral Black Swan
This swan appears sometimes, and spends other periods at Roath Park Lake and Cardiff Bay.

below, a common resident! .....

male Reed Bunting - Emberiza schoeniclus
Reed Buntings are quite common in both reed beds. This one is feeding on seed put out on a fence post by the small W lake viewpoint. There are quite a few regular visitors who put food out in this way at various points around the park.
Tufted Duck - Aythya fuligula[bottom] & Lesser Scaup - Aythya affinis [top]
The above shows the drake Lesser Scaup which visited in two consecutive winters, 2009-10 and 2010-11. A cropped and fairly heavily sharpened record shot. The bird also spent time in Cardiff Bay. Note the peak/sharp corner at the rear crown, and the flat nape. An ex pat birder I met a couple of times in Vancouver once told me that he always thinks they look like they've been hit on the back of the head with a plank of wood! I think that's a pretty good description and fully admit to having used it myself when showing the bird to beginners.
It's back again! Now Dec 27th 2011 - here's a slightly better photo, this time next to a Greater Scaup:
Gtr Scaup [L] and Lsr Scaup [R]
Drake Garganey - Mar 14th 2012
A rare visitor, this very smart drake Garganey was a pleasing find. This is a migratory duck which is a summer visitor and passage migrant to the UK. They winter much farther south than other ducks, in tropical Africa. This is a typical date.
