This Mute Swan is suffering from the so-called 'flamingo swan' condition, caused by algal bloom and/or bacteria as a result of too much white bread being thrown in the water, the untouched stuff forming a rotting mulch. This example is extreme, and the damage to the flight feathers is very clear. Fortunately the rangers have contacted Swan Rescue who are coming to take this particular bird away for treatment. If you do feed the wildfowl at Cossie please don't use white bread. Granary is better, but best is grain - small bags are sold at the info centre for just a £1. This is what the WWT feed to the wild Whooper and Bewick's Swans in the winter.
