Lavernock Point

Pretty quiet with a fresh westerly blowing. A Buzzard & Sparrowhawk, a few redwings (c60) in the bushes and two brambling in with small flock of chaffinches. A flock of goldfinches feeding in the top fields, a single meadow pipit over and a few blackbirds in the hedgerows, along with the usual corvids.

unusual sight this morning was a Treecreeper in Cogan Wood feeding like a Blue Tit, by hanging upside down by it's feet on thin twigs and picking what were presumably insects off the foliage. Also found the LTT/Goldcrest/Blue Tit flock again but couldn't find a YBW with them.

Highlights of the Glamorgan Bird Club monthly walk this morning [8 participants] were fem Bullfinch [not seen one for a while here], nice scoped up views of 3 Snipe sitting in the 'snipe paddock' and a late Wheatear on one of the medieval village  buildings and also a Grey Wagtail in the ditch there.

Cosmeston Yellow-browed Warbler

Jeff Curtis found a Yellow-Browed Warbler with a feeding flock, at 11:30 this morning along the central path between the two viewing points. On getting the message, I got there at about 12:00 and fairly soon had a brief view. It was feeding in the Sycamores with about 8 Goldcrest, 3 Chiffchaff, Blue Tits and Great Tits. The flock slowly moved up & down the path, and ended up just beyond the far side of the bridge. Matthew Meehan turned up and he heard it call once, near the bridge. We then left as it started to pour with rain, although Gareth Stamp was still there.

2 Teal on W lake this morning were the first of the autumn. A Kingfisher showed for the first time in ages between the main bridge and the hide. Around 20 Swallow over the lakes. Jeff Curtis had 2 Chiffies by the first viewpoint.

Saturday, 6 October 2012

V short walk at Cossie this morning. 48 Tufted Duck on W lake - numbers increasing. 24 Kayakers on E lake meant that the birds, incl gulls, were few.
Interesting to see that the boat washing facility now has a spray head and can be used. I hope it is - we do not want killer shrimps or zebra mussels!
